The name of this year's challenge is FIRST Overdrive. Large track-balls are placed on an overpass, and it is up to the robots and their drivers to knock them off. Points are scored by knocking the balls off the overpass, hurdling track-balls over the overpass and completing laps around the track.

The first 30 seconds of the game, known as the "Hybrid Mode", is when the robots operate autonomously (without anyone controlling them) and recieve signals from a robocoach. After the Hybrid Mode, it is up to the drive team to operate the robot for the remainder of the game. If the track balls are placed back on the overpass before the end of regulation time, additional points are scored for that alliance.
